Trauma and the Role of Therapy in Healing
Trauma is a profoundly distressing experience that overwhelms an individual’s capacity to cope, leaving a lasting impact on both the mind and body. Trauma can result from a single event, such as an accident or assault, or ongoing experiences like abuse or neglect. Its effects often manifest as:
Emotional symptoms: Anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, or emotional numbness.
Physical symptoms: Fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, or chronic pain.
Behavioural symptoms: Avoidance, hypervigilance, or impulsive behaviours.
Trauma disrupts the brain’s natural processing systems, causing individuals to remain “stuck” in a state of heightened stress or fear long after the event has occurred.
